Traffic Compaction/Wear


 Criteria for maximizing surface stability and traction on Seaisle 1 sports fields
•Carefully select sand particle size, uniformity, gradation, and shape
•Incorporate 1-3% (by weight) organic matter prior to grass establishment to enhance stability
•Use a rootzone mix with rapid drainage characteristics
•Install good surface and subsurface drainage
•Maximize root growth of the grass through good management
   
 Proper fertilization (spoon-feeding, particularly N-P-K )
     Proper mowing height to maximize carbohydrate production
     Proper irrigation scheduling (infrequent, but deep percolation)
     Timely applications of plant growth regulators
     Maintain high shoot density and turf shoot/root biomass to resist wear injury

•Provide a protective cushion against compactive forces
     
 Regularly scheduled aeration
Light sand topdressing
      Use of crumb rubber

     
Avoid extremes in dryness or wetness by carefully scheduling irrigation - generally
      1 inch (25 mm) per week depending on climate
      Develop a topdressing program that controls thatch, creates a mat-thatch layer intermingled
with sand or soil, maintains a level playing surface, and amends the surface soil texture when needed
      Limit thatch to <0.50 - inch (<13 mm)
      Use soil stabilization materials when needed
      Avoid excess N fertilization (which increases leaf growth and enhances color at the expense
of root/stolon/rhizome development
           Aerate, aerate, aerate on a regular schedule
