ALGAE PROBLEMS

Green algae
(Chlamydomonas, Cosmarium, Cylindrocystis)
Prefer acidic (pH<6.0) conditions
Blue-green algae
(Lyngbya, Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Phormidium)
Prefer pH>7.0 and can come from ponds or effluent water containing significant amounts of magnesium, manganese, iron, or sulfur or from highapplication rates of pesticides or amendments containing these elements.

Control strategies:
•maintain soil and water between pH 6.0-7.0
• improve air circulation
• reduce tree shade
• maintain a balanced nutrition
• raise mowing height
• use frequent topdressing to shade the algae
• improve water infiltration/percolation/drainage
• apply wetting agents: Primer, Cascade. Aquifer,   Yuccah, Infiltrix, Aqueduct
• use nitrate forms of fertilizer
• avoid sulfur-containing amendments
Fungicides: chlorothalonil (Chlorostar, Caconil 2787, Echo, Lite, Manicure, Monterey Bravo,
Thalonil
mancozeb (Dithane, Fore, Formec, Mancozeb, Protect)
quartenary ammonium salts (Physan, Algaen-X)
others (Junction, Zerotol—peroxide base)
